Where the ranges come from
Each bar is one cost guide's published price for the job you describe. They are national figures from different methods, so they do not agree, and a quote inside most of them is a normal price. This is how each row is built:

The range hood add-ons go on every row: a new electrical circuit $150 to $400, the permit $50 to $250 and drywall patching $100 to $300 (all Arspura; HVACDatabase also gives $50 to $250 for permits), and makeup air $1,500 to $4,500 installed (HVACDatabase's makeup air guide). Adding a source's job price to the hood's price and the add-ons is our method, not any one source's, so read the rows as a check on a bid, not a stand-in for one. Arspura says its prices assume a mid-cost metro area and run 15 to 25% higher in New York, San Francisco and Boston.
Reading the answer
Inside every range: a normal price for the work. Check the quote still lists each line below. Above every range: ask for it itemized. The usual reasons are work you did not tick: a long duct run with several elbows, a roof run on a two-story house, makeup air, or a general contractor's overhead on top. Below every range: something is probably missing, most often the duct, the permit or the electrical, and it will come back as a change order. For a range hood, the biggest swing is makeup air: a hood over 400 CFM in a house with a standard gas water heater or furnace can add more than the rest of the job. A complete range hood quote gives each part its own line: the hood, the labor, the duct and cap, the electrical, makeup air or why it is not needed, the permit and the patching. What a range hood installation quote should include goes through each, with the red flags.
